Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to contest particular decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
