The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard body horror, but within Together resides a profound examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that arise in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
