Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such drugs must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become starving," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle management.
