Conservative responses to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “Never in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the censorship procedure.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions raise significant questions about what may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans immediately called for increased openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a future Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Release
But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed some conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was relatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy folders of files that contained no previously unseen data.
