Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
